Dancehall Soulstress Cherine Anderson recently showed another side when she opened for multi-talented Okinawan trio - Isamu Shimoji, Sunday, and Yukito Ara, to a packed audience at the Embassy of Japan's Traditional Concert on December 7, 2009, at the Courtleigh Auditorium. The day before the concert a select few were invited by the Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica, His Excellency Hiroshi Yamaguchi and his wife, to lunch at their home in Kingston. Stories shared about Anderson's time spent in Japan and pleasantries exchanged made for a wonderful afternoon, and a great prelude to the event. Anderson, a past recipient of the T.A.K.A.S.E. Foundation Scholarship, spent one year at the prestigious Keio University in Tokyo, Japan studying Japanese Language and Literature. With performing arts engrained in every fiber of her being, it didn't take her long to find her niche on campus and she performed at many campus events along with other Japanese student performers.
At the Embassy Concert Cherine, clad in a beautiful, body-hugging, long indigo dress, addressed the audience in Japanese and proceeded to sing in their native tongue, the popular Japanese song "First Love" by Utada Hikaru. Jamaicans, Japanese, dignitaries and diplomats who were in attendance were all very impressed as was evident with the applause she received after her performance. According to Ms. Chihiro Irisawa, cultural officer for the Embassy of Japan and event organizer, "As a consequence of Cherine's performance in Japanese and English, the concert was a complete success. The Embassy was pleased to have been able to extend to the Japanese and Jamaican audience such a high caliber of music." If this is any indication of things to come for Cherine Anderson, we can all rest assured that even greater things lie ahead for the multi-talented singer/actress.
